MVC Swim Team Surges to Strong Start

The MVC Swim team is making waves this season with dominant wins over Seaside, York, and Oakwood on both the boys' and girls' sides. The boys' team also secured a victory over PCS last Friday, putting themselves in a fantastic spot to win a third straight division championship.

Boys' Team:
Junior team captain Tyler Gill is setting the tone for the boys' squad as he aims to return to CCS this year. He's joined by sophomores Peyton Sanchez and Huang Jue, key members of last year's league-winning 200 Medley Relay. All three are eyeing their first individual CCS berths, with Peyton and Jue focusing on the Butterfly and Breaststroke, and Tyler in the Freestyle.

The team's depth has been bolstered by the emergence of sophomore Luciano Guerra, who stepped up with wins in both the 50 and 100 Freestyle against PCS while Gill was sidelined due to injury. MVC showed dominance in the 50 Freestyle last week, securing the top three spots with fast finishes from Jacob Wong and Legor Moskalenko. Coach Staka says he sees this as a promising preview for league finals, where MVC expects to rack up points in this event.

MVC also boasts top talent in distance events with Junior Rowan Williams and Freshman Finn Workman leading the 200 and 500 Freestyle. The duo has the potential to finish top 2 in both events at league finals.

Girls' Team:
The girls' team, led by senior captain Sarah Varghese, is off to a strong start despite key injuries to swimmers Hannah Reuter and Zoie Meeker.

They showed resilience in a hard-fought 65-79 battle with reigning league champion PCS.

Junior Mariella Guevara, last year's league champion, has been experimenting with new events like the 200 IM and 100 Butterfly, setting up the team for multiple individual league titles in May. Meanwhile, Ariana Patterson has transitioned from a sprint specialist to a distance contender, adding versatility to the lineup.

Sophomore Zoe Sanchez continues to shine as one of the league's top backstrokers while also excelling in the Butterfly and Freestyle. Coach Staka says he faces a tough decision on which events and relays will maximize her impact at the end of the season.

Newcomers Avery Beck and Katherine Varley have made immediate contributions. Kate placed second in the 200 Freestyle against PCS with a season-best time, while Avery posted personal bests in the 100 Freestyle and led off the 200 Freestyle Relay.

Upcoming:
The MVC swim team looks to keep the momentum going with a home meet on Friday, March 21, against Rancho San Juan and Saint Francis. League finals are set for Thursday, May 1 (JV) and Friday, May 2 (Varsity).
